The UDZ is compositionally heterogeneous, containing felsic to intermediate gneisses and augen gneisses, which host bodies of mafic rocks. Samples of felsic gneisses, garnet amphibolites and one retrogressed eclogite were studied. Quartz, plagioclase, microcline, biotite and hornblende were the main minerals present in the felsic rocks. Eclogite in hand sample and thin section.

In the present paper the name is applied to a rock derived from some eruptive and bearing garnets in a matrix composed Eclogite ( pronounced /ˈɛklədʒaɪt/) is a coarse-grained mafic ( basaltic in composition) metamorphic rock. Eclogite is of special interest for at least two reasons. First, it forms at pressures greater than those typical of the crust of the Earth. Second, being unusually dense rock, eclogite can play an important role in driving convection within The UDZ is compositionally heterogeneous, containing felsic to intermediate gneisses and augen gneisses, which host bodies of mafic rocks.

Eclogite as a rock type was first defined by a French mineralogist René Just Haüy in 1822 2. He used the term for a “fancy rock” composed mainly of two minerals “diallage and garnet accompanied accidentally by kyanite, quartz, epidote, and lamellar amphibole” 4. More pictures. Eclogite ("ECK-lo-jite") is an extreme metamorphic rock formed by regional metamorphism of basalt under very high pressures and temperatures. This type of metamorphic rock is the name of highest-grade metamorphic facies. Eclogite is a metamorphic rock. That is, it originally started as something else and was transformed by heat and pressure. In the case of eclogite, the rock originally started as mafic basalt or gabbro (igneous rocks relatively low in silica) that formed as seafloor welling out from the spreading center of a fissure in an oceanic plate. Eclogite is a rock that typically forms from high pressure metamorphism of mafic igneous rock at temperatures in excess of 500oC and pressures in excess of 12kbar. Eclogite facies rocks are usually associated with blueschist facies rocks and can form when oceanic crust is subducted to great depths before being returned to the surface.

Eclogite, any member of a small group of igneous and metamorphic rocks whose composition is similar to that of basalt. Eclogites consist primarily of green pyroxene (omphacite) and red garnet (pyrope), with small amounts of various other stable minerals—e.g., rutile. They are formed when volcanic Eclogite Rock 1 Definition. From French, Greek eklogē selection with reference to the selective content of the rock + -ite1 Metamorphic Rocks.

Textures in the blueschist metabasic rocks of the island of Syros, Greece, indicate a reaction forming omphacite and garnet from earlier glaucophane and epidote. Mafic rocks composed essentially of garnet * clinopyroxene occur in association with metamorphic ultramafic rocks in the Penninic Adula-Cima Lunga Nappe

Eclogite and garnet pyroxenite from Stor Jougdan, Seve
n. A coarse-grained greenish rock consisting primarily of garnet and sodic pyroxene, and often including quartz, kyanite, and rutile. One possibility is that eclogite rocks are broken into fragments and somehow squeezed to the surface as tectonic blocks. Some models of subduction zones include a channel of soft serpentinite immediately above the subducting plate.
Eclogite-facies metamorphic conditions encompass a wide range of pressure–temperature space from deep crustal to mantle depths, reflecting tectonic setting. Eclogite is a metamorphic rock found in gneisses, in sizes from small fist-sized pockets just a few centimetres in diameter to large belts that several hundred metres. “The rock was first described in Norway about 100 years ago, and since then scientists from all over the world have flocked to Norway’s West Coast to learn more about eclogite,” says Engvik. The depth of the granulite to eclogite transition is predicted to be dependent upon whole-rock composition, including ferrous:ferric iron ratio. Natural omphacite-bearing granulite is predicted to form a transitional stage between eclogite and high- P garnet granulite for monzodioritic to gabbroic compositions. THE term "eclogite" was first introduced into the geological literature of Europe in 1822 by Haiiy in his Traith de mineralogie, in which he gave the name to a rock composed chiefly of green augite and garnets.
